La Nouvelle Eve (the New Eve), a variety and dancing cabaret, is located at the foot of Montmartre. The theatre was built in 1898 and was originally called the Fantaisies Parisiennes. At the time, the famous vaudeville writer Leon Gaudillot lived just above the cabaret and the plays of Jean de la Fontaine, Eugène Scribe, Eugène Marin Labiche, and Georges Feydeau were being performed.
In 1920, the first topless revue was created by Léo Berryer and the theatre was nicknamed the Gaîté Parisienne (loosely translated as the cheerful Parisian).
For several seasons the Gaîté was “the place to be” for the Paris chic set. During World War II, the theatre became a cinema.
